Abstract

The study reflects the nutritional status of preschool children and its influencing factors. Side by side degrees of nutritional status indices have been estimated. Nine villages selected from three different tehsil of Barmer district, Rajasthan. Household data were collected using structured questionnaire from Bhil households. Height-for-age, weight-for-age and weight-for-height were calculated to assess the influence of the explanatory variables on nutritional status. Results revealed that about 15 percent boys and 20 percent girls suffered from moderate to severe forms of malnutrition according to weight for height, whereas 18 percent of boys and girls suffered from moderate to severe forms of under nutrition with respect to height for age. Similarly, 37 percent of boys and 40 percent of girls suffered from moderate to severe forms of malnutrition with respect to weight for age. In the present study girls were found to be more vulnerable as compare to boys in weight for age. Dietary consumption, mother’s education, mother’s position among housewives and child’s height were positively related to the child’s nutritional status. Also, mother’s age, child’s age and dependency ratio were negative influenced on nutritional status. Policy options that would promote formal education for women, home use of nutritional diet and reduction in dependency ratio were recommended to achieve meaningful improvement in nutritional status.
